Gemini error 1155 shows up as “Something went wrong (1155)” and cuts off the reply before it arrives. In most cases it is a communication failure between your browser or app and Google's servers. When many people see the same code at the same time, Gemini itself is unstable and the fix is to wait.
Quick answer
- What is it? A generic Gemini error. Google does not publish what its numeric codes mean, so there is no official definition of 1155.
- Is it an outage? It can be. On October 8, more than 4,000 people reported Gemini problems on Downdetector, and 1155 was the most cited code. The disruption lasted about an hour and cleared on its own.
- Does Google's status page warn you? Not always. During that disruption, the status page kept showing everything as operational.
- Can you fix it on your side? When the problem is only yours, yes: a new chat, VPN off and cleared site data fix most cases.
How to tell if it is an outage or just you
- Check Downdetector or IsDown. If Gemini reports are climbing right now, it is an outage. Nothing on your computer will fix it: wait and try again in a few minutes.
- Test on another device or network. If Gemini works on your phone over mobile data and fails on your computer, the problem is the computer or its network.
- Do not rely on the status page alone. Short disruptions can come and go without showing up there.
How to fix Gemini error 1155
If it is only you, go in order and stop at the first step that works.
- Save your prompt and start a new chat. A conversation can get stuck. Copy the text, click “New chat” and paste it there.
- Reload the page or close and reopen the app. In the browser, press Ctrl + F5 (Cmd + Shift + R on Mac).
- Turn off VPN and proxy. It is one of the causes users cite most often. If you need the VPN, test without it just to confirm.
- Open Gemini in an incognito window. If it works, clear site data for gemini.google.com (padlock next to the address › cookies and site data) and disable extensions one at a time.
- Switch networks. Try your phone's hotspot. Corporate network blocks can also drop the connection.
- On Android, clear the Gemini app cache. If that does not help, clear the app data and sign in again.
- Send feedback from Gemini with the time and device, so Google can link the error to an incident.
Error 1155 vs 1099 vs 1097
All three use the same generic screen, but reports point to different places. 1155 is tied to the connection with Google's servers and shows up en masse when Gemini is unstable. 1099 is tied to the conversation: a stuck or overly long chat, usually fixed by starting a new one. See our guide to Gemini error 1099. 1097 is tied to the Google Workspace account, its license and chat history, and goes through your admin. See our guide to Gemini error 1097.
FAQ
Does error 1155 delete my chats?
We found no reports of chat history being lost with 1155. What you lose is the reply being generated, so copy your prompt before starting over.
How long does error 1155 last?
When it is an outage, it lasts as long as the disruption: on October 8, about an hour. When it is only you, the steps above usually clear it.
Does switching models fix it?
There is no confirmation that it does. Since the problem is the connection, the network and browser steps work best.
When AI stops, what happens to operations?
One hour of Gemini down already delays support, content and any task that depends on it. That is why an important process should not depend on a single tool with no fallback. It is what we design when we build AI apps, APIs and automations. To review your case, talk to our team.
